Veterinary Technician, Bideawee Manhattan

Beverly Rodriguez, a native of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, was not always on track to have a career working with animals. In fact, she initially worked as a social worker straight out of college, a decidedly human-focused profession. However, many of the traits often found in social work-care, compassion, empathy-are also found, in abundance, in the animal field.
In 2002, inspired by the work of the veterinarians and the veterinary technicians on one of her favorite television programs, Animal Planet's 'Emergency Vets,' Beverly went back to school to get her technician's license.
After completing the "very intense" two year program, her school set her up with an internship at Bideawee's Veterinary Practice in Manhattan. "It was a perfect match," says Beverly, "I was already a Bideawee supporter and had recently submitted a volunteer application."
Having demonstrated exceptional talent during her three-month internship, Beverly was offered a full-time position at Bideawee upon the completion of the internship. She has been a friendly fixture at the Manhattan Vet Practice since August, 2005.
Beverly has been very impressed with the level of care people bringing their pets to Bideawee demonstrate and thinks that is at least in part due to the nature of Bideawee as a nonprofit and as an organization with a reputation for whole-heartedly supporting the human-animal bond.
Unlike at a standard Vet's office, at Bideawee, veterinary technicians do not only care for the animals of private clients, they also care for all the animals up for adoption in our Adoption Centers. Caring for the Adoption Center animals is a special treat that Beverly enjoys immensely; it gives her the unique opportunity to track an animal's progress closely. "And the best part," according to Beverly, "is that many adopters bring their animals back to us for Vet care."
The former Bideawee resident she looks forward to seeing most? Beverly doesn't hesitate, "Bogey, an orange tabby cat; he's such a lover-a real sweet cat."
Beverly would not comment when asked if she would call herself a dog person or a cat person, but her four cats at home (Tigre, Miss Jolie, Smurfette, and Jerry), two of whom she adopted from Bideawee, might have something to say about that!
