Bitsy almost didn't survive. She got a second chance at life through the dedication and caring medical attention of the Bideawee staff and volunteers.
Her story is an all too familiar one for the stray cats that suffer outside in the long, cold winter months. While there are many people who work hard to reduce the feral cat population, including some of the staff that work at Bideawee, there are times when a few slip through the cracks. This was the case this winter when a volunteer got an urgent call to check on a litter of stray kittens that looked terribly sick and were suffering in the cold streets of Brooklyn.
When she arrived on the scene, she was saddened to find several ailing kittens - including one that had already died - stretched out and frozen on the ground.
That's just when she spotted Bitsy, huddled up against the cold and not moving even when she was approached and picked up. Her eyes and nose were sealed shut with hardened mucous and she was completely infested with fleas. It was as though she had given up and was waiting to die.
Until she could be brought to Bideawee, our caring volunteer fed her and used a warm compress to clean the crust from her eyes and nose. Her eyes were pouring pus from the infection and flea dirt was shedding off her like confetti.
When brought back to the warm, comforting environment at Bideawee, she was in shock and immediately our vet started her on IV fluids, antibiotics and put her under a heat lamp. Luckily for Bitsy, her heart rate and body temp went up fairly quickly and she made it through the first night.
Bitsy is looking better each day. She is now eating on her own, talking to us, making eye contact, kneading, and purring, and will be adoptable soon! She seems to know that the wonderful vets at Bideawee saved her life and has decided that life is worth living.
Unlike her siblings, Bitsy was one of the lucky ones. With a donation from you today, you will ensure that Bitsy isn't the only lucky cat to survive because of the work we do each day at Bideawee. Please make a donation help us continue this life-saving mission.
