Pet-Friendly Cooking Tips from Lisa Fortunato
Keeping it simple, tasty, and nutritious is easy to do once you get into a rhythm of cooking for your dog. Using fresh vegetables is great, but for ease of preparation you can use the frozen chopped varieties. The advantage of using the frozen vegetables is that you won't need to cook them, just rinse under water and let them defrost in a colander or strainer. I was amazed that my dogs went crazy over cauliflower, because personally speaking, I can take it or leave it.
Vegetable Medley
1 cup chopped cauliflower florets
1 cup chopped broccoli florets
1/2 cup baby peas
2 tablespoons grated Pecorino Romano cheese
organic chicken broth
Combine the cauliflower and broccoli florets and break into small pieces with a fork. Add the peas and grated cheese and stir till combined. I suggest two tablespoons of vegetables to every half-cup of dry kibble. Add enough organic chicken broth to moisten the mixture, but still maintaining the crunchiness of the kibble. Store vegetable medley in a Tupperware container in the refrigerator for no more than a week.
Simple Snacks
If your dog is watching his weight, here are a few guilt free treats you can offer as you probably already have them in your house. The trick is monitoring how much you offer them, as too much of anything can cause tummy trouble.
Baby Carrots: About 2 -3 per 15lbs.
Dried baby anchovies (available in Asian grocery stores)
Unsalted popcorn: 1/4 cup
Apple slices: 3 slices
Plain greek yougurt with honey: 2 tablespoons/1 tsp.
Enjoy!
Please always be cautious when altering your pet's diet in any way.
