Excerpts from Reading to Dogs Volunteers:

Sandy, RTD Volunterer
At the school I visit, this kid, Jonathan, just 15, has improved his reading skills so much I'm stunned! Initially he was totally guessing at words and after about 4 sessions with Elvis and Lola, he was able to read many sentences correctly from a Clifford the Big Red Dog book! He even read with some expression! He's reportedly showing big improvements in his regular school reading program! He started to tell me about a Xmas concert that he is in and he suddenly looked at me and said, "Do you wanna come?" So I'll be attending the concert and dinner held at the school next Wed!

Diane K., RTD Volunteer
Brad was so excited to be going when I put his vest on this morning that he ran around the lawn in huge circles and I had to struggle to keep him awake half way through the 2nd reading session!  Once the kids start moving around though he's full of energy!  He's starting to think he's pretty hot stuff!

Florence, RTD Volunteer

  • We did our first RTD at Downing School in Malverne today.  The same three students are in the program as last year. At the end of one child's turn to read he said to me, "Do you only come once a week?"  I think we are on to something here. Florence, Penni, and Coach
  • The little girl in the Reading to Dogs group at Malverne who is really a good reader but is incredibly shy is making great progress. She was actually smiling when she came into the room.  She greeted me and Coach, who was furiously wagging his tailless behind.
