Penny, a very pretty little Border Terrier/Jack Russell mix, arrived at Bideawee in terrible shape. She had been abandoned by her family and was languishing at a municipal shelter. The family told the shelter that Penny had been injured falling off a bed. The evidence, however, told a different story.

Long term neglect and cruelty had taken a terrible toll. She was nearly catatonic. Her body had nearly shut down. She refused to eat. She couldn't urinate. She stared straight ahead. No signs of life in her little eyes.

It was at this point that Bideawee stepped in. Our staff saw the potential in this pup. They brought her to our Manhattan Adoption Center where they began an intensive rehabilitation plan. They called her Penny Braveheart.

The love and attention started to pay off. She started to trust her caretakers. She developed an appetite, put on some weight, and discovered she could still play - a little bit.

Unfortunately, Penny's travails were not over. She recently began to wobble when she stood, and worse, began to drag her hind legs when she tried to walk. New x-rays indicated that Penny is suffering from a degenerative disc disease. Our veterinarians administered steroids to help with the inflammation and pain. She was placed on a regimen of rest.

This new setback threatens to impede all of the progress Penny has made since coming to Bideawee. After consulting with specialists, it was determined that this little dog needs neurosurgery to improve her condition and help alleviate her pain. But this is a very expensive course of treatment.

After everything Penny has endured, it would be a terrible thing not to be able to help her overcome this last hurdle. Penny shouldn't have to endure this pain any longer. Your generous donations can help make Penny's journey to a new forever home a reality. And there are many more dogs and cats who also need your assistance.
