Frequently Asked Questions: Volunteering
What days and times can I volunteer?
Volunteer hours vary between our locations, so please contact us for more details.
Are volunteers trained?
Yes, every volunteer who interacts with resident animals at Bideawee must participate in an orientation and training program. All volunteers attend a general orientation session where they get to know each other and are introduced to Bideawee's mission, programs and staff. Volunteers are also trained on relevant operations and safety policies and procedures, which are described in a Volunteer Information Package provided to each volunteer. Volunteers are also matched with a "mentor" who is usually a staff member or an experienced volunteer.
Can my child volunteer?
Volunteers working directly with animals must be 18 years or older, but there are opportunities for all ages, so please contact us for more details.
If I prefer, can I spend time with cats only?
Volunteers may spend time with cats or dogs or both; we are very flexible and are grateful for any time you can give to these animals in need. In addition to working with animals, there are many other volunteer opportunities at Bideawee too.
I have a very sweet and gentle dog. Can he be in your pet therapy program?
There is a 4-step process to becoming a pet therapy volunteer:
1) A telephone inquiry to the volunteer department at Bideawee
2) Completion of the application packet
3) An interview and official evaluation of the animal's temperament
4) Mentor training
Please contact us for more details.
Can I volunteer at a Bideawee offsite event?
Yes, you may represent Bideawee at public outreach events if you are an active volunteer in one of our ongoing programs for 3 months.
