CYNTHIA BRENNER
Cynthia is a very active retired teacher who has volunteered for Bideawee since 1995. "Besides my family," she says, "my two main loves are children and animals. So I enjoy teaching children how to act responsibly with their pets. I also like to help older students explore animal-related careers when I give them a tour at Bideawee."
Cynthia's most favorite volunteer job, however, is taking Johan, her handsome golden Labrador, to listen to youngsters read in local schools and libraries as part of Bideawee's popular Reading to Dogs Program. This unique program helps children who, for a variety of reasons, may be reluctant readers learn to relax and enjoy reading, instead of seeing it as an unpleasant chore.
Cynthia has a very active mind and comes up with countless creative ideas. She wrote lyrics to the tune of "How Much is that Doggy in the Window?" for a second-grade humane education appearance, which she later adapted for guests to sing at a staff member's retirement party. Her imagination comes to the fore when Cynthia helps staff promote Bideawee's events and outreach programs, which includes Reading to Dogs and humane education presentations.
Cynthia is a shining example of the limitless energy and generosity of thousands of volunteers who contribute to the vibrant quality of life on Long Island.
