Puppy Kindergarten
It's never too young to start your puppy with training and socialization. As a matter of fact, the earlier you start, the easier time you will have down the road.
Many adopters are surprised to learn that Bideawee behaviorists have already started working with their 8 week-old puppy before he has even been adopted. Bideawee's Behavior & Training program works closely with every animal in our Adoption Centers. This is one of the ways our staff gets to know the personalities and needs of every animal in our care. However, it is important that you don't forget to continue with the training and socializing after you have brought your puppy home.
At as early as eight weeks of age, your puppy can begin to pick up on basic training: "sit," "down," and "wait." Bideawee Behaviorist Mike Rueb recommends using positive reinforcement training-rewarding your puppy with treats, toys, or affection for a job well done. "But don't over-do it," he warns, "after five to ten minutes of training exercises, puppies can begin to lose focus. Several short 'sessions' a day will work wonders."
As important as training is for good behavior, Mike stresses proper socialization as crucial to proper behavioral development in dogs. "Throw a party and invite men, women, and children over to your home so your puppy can get used to having people around and touching him. Just make sure they know to be gentle!"

Bideawee offers Puppy Kindergarten at all three of our Learning Centers, and as always, if you adopt from us, this session is free. This series of introductory classes, for puppies eight weeks to six month of age, teaches basic behavior training and provides a priceless opportunity for puppies to socialize with each other, as well as the adults (and often children) in attendance. Bideawee staff behaviorists and trainers also set aside time each class to answer your specific questions.
