Dog Friendly Businesses in Tudor City

By Rebecca Reisner

In a city where residents multitask like kindergarten teachers during a fire drill, it only makes sense to walk your dog while running your errands. Tolerance at local businesses ranges from almost wanting dogs to come in just so they can chase you out (the owner of my corner 24-hour deli had a rehearsed speech ready for me, “Does this look like park? No, this is store!”), quietly looking the other way because they value your business (some hair salons, sandwich shops, and office-supply stores), and actively welcoming all well-behaved dogs. The following list consists of businesses on the hospitable side of the continuum in and around Tudor City.

TD Bank
685 Third Avenue, at 43rd Street
Monday to Friday 7:30am to 8pm.
Saturday 7:30am to 6pm.
Sunday 11am to 4pm.
The bank is Canadian owned and acts like it. The polite tellers keep a basket of dog biscuits on the counter, and management puts a bowl of water on the carpet in the ATM vestibule. This particular branch has two Penny Arcades (machines that weigh your coins so you can exchange them for bills), and both of them are usually in service, wheee!

Conrad’s Bike Shop
25 Tudor City Place
Monday through Saturday 11am to 7pm.
Enthusiasts come to Conrad’s from all over the city to shop for bicycles and accessories and get tune-ups. Brands include Pinarello, Storck, Seven Cycles, Eddy Merckx, and Conalgo. Vintage bike parts sold. The friendly owner-operator is usually on premises. Air pump outside.

Amreen’s Hallmark
820 Second Avenue, at corner of 44th Street
Monday to Friday 8am to 7:30pm.
Saturday 10am to 6pm.
Sunday 10am to 5pm.
With a huge selection of greeting cards, gift wrap, chocolates, postal supplies, calendars, and candles, Amreen’s occupies two floors. Despite a recent incident — a dog’s indiscretion ruined a low-lying row of cards — this accommodating retailer allows canine visitors.

Verizon Stop N’ Go Wireless
Second Avenue between 41st and 42nd streets
Monday to Saturday 10am to 8pm.
Sunday 10am to 5pm.
This is a spacious store with a feeling of permanence (not one of those phone-booth-sized fly-by-night wireless outfits) where you can find smartphones, cell phones, and accessories. Seating available.

657 Third Avenue at 42nd Street
Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm.
Saturday 10am to 8pm.
Sunday 11am to 7pm.
You have to love a multinational corporation that welcomes pets in its stores. Actually, I’m not positive that every Gap store allows dogs, but this one definitely does — the manager assured me. So grab your beagle mix and a handful of mid-rise skinny jeans and head for a dressing room. The store includes Baby Gap and Gap Kids.

UnLimited Jeans Co.
850 Second Avenue, between 45th and 46th streets.
Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm.
Saturday 10am to 7pm.
Sunday 11am to 7pm.
UnLimited has menswear and womenswear and specializes in jeans. Also T-shirts, Calvin Klein underwear, socks, sneakers, Clarks shoes, Ray-Bans, jackets, and coats. It’s one of the few retailers that discount North Face coats early in the season.

UN Plaza Pharmacy
800 Second Avenue, between 42nd and 43rd streets
Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm.
Saturday 10am to 7pm.
Closed Sunday.
This amazingly compact pharmacy has a great selection of Crabtree & Evelyn products, hair accessories, and dry goods. It offers surprisingly good sales considering it’s not a chain. And, of course, the friendly pharmacists would be delighted to transfer your prescription there.

M.B. Fashions Valet
5 Tudor City Place
Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm.
Saturday 8am to 6pm.
Closed Sunday. A family business, MB has dry-cleaning, wash and fold service, and tailoring (including wedding gowns). Free pick up and delivery.

Basics Hardware
845 Second Avenue between 45th and 46th streets
Monday to Sunday 10am to 10pm
If you’re wondering where you can buy a space heater at 9:30pm, here’s your answer. This friendly little hardware store offers everything from a stalwart key-making station to a selection of reed diffusers. Also small kitchen appliances, bed-bug mattress protectors, laundry supplies, and area rugs. When not too busy, they can be persuaded to deliver.

Sussex Wine & Spirits
Second Avenue between 42nd and 43rd streets
Monday to Thursday 9am to 10pm.
Friday and Saturday 9am to 11pm.
Sunday 1pm to 9pm.
In addition to a huge selection of wines, spirits, and mixers, this store carries wine glasses and other gift items. They keep a box of biscuits behind the counter for dogs. Delivers.

Tudor Paws
5 Tudor City Place*
Open seven days a week, usually early in the morning until late at night, but call first to make sure.
A pet store that allows dogs isn’t exactly breaking news, but this one stands out because of its neighborhood feel and long, if casually kept, hours of operation. In addition to Puppia harnesses, Nature’s Miracle, Nylabones and the like, the store carries gifts for people, so you can pick up a ceramic dog lamp or Britto cat figurine for a birthday party. The owners speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Albanian. And they gift-wrap.

*Tudor Paws is a bit tricky to find. From Second Avenue, walk east on 41st Street, and cross Tudor City Place. Just before the dead end that overlooks the United Nations, look to your right. Under the scaffolding, you’ll see Tudor Paws.
