Adoption: How it works

If the pet is in our Manhattan or Westhampton shelters:

We are excited to invite you to walk-in to our NYC and Westhampton Adoption Centers! Feel free to stop in at your earliest convenience to meet your future furry friend, no appointment needed! The submission of your adoption application does not hold a pet for you. You can take home a pet same day and adopters are helped on a first-come first-served basis. We do not hold any adoptable animals that are living in the shelter.

*Please note that you cannot proceed with any animal interactions in our Manhattan shelter until you have all requirements to adopt present with you. You will still be welcome to walk through and look at our animals if you don’t have everything ready.

If the pet is in our Wantagh shelter:

Our adoption team will contact you via phone call to discuss the pet. We will then schedule an appointment for you to come to the shelter for an in-person interaction at the shelter so you can meet the pet and take them home with you same day! Appointments are required for this location.

If the pet is in Foster Care

Our adoption team will contact you via email to coordinate a Zoom interview with the pets foster parent so you can learn about how he or she has been doing in a home. After a Zoom meeting, we will schedule an in-person interaction at the shelter so you can meet the pet and take them home with you same day!

ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that you must be 18 years or older to adopt.

What to Bring

  • Photo ID with current address- If the ID does not have your current address, we also need to see proof of residency on either your lease/mortgage bill or a utility bill.
  • Proof in Writing that Pets Are Welcome in the Building. If you are a renter, we need to see a pet rider or a copy of the pet policy as stated in your lease. We can also accept an email from your management company or landlord, although it must be a management email. We cannot accept anything handwritten and we cannot accept texts, phone calls, or verbal confirmation. No exceptions.
  • If you own your home, please bring the first page of your mortgage, your homeowners insurance policy or a copy of your deed. Owners of co-ops and condos must follow house rules.
  • Adopting a dog? Adopters must bring a leash, collar and harness (if it doesn’t fit we can try to swap with a better size for you). If you already have a dog at home, you must bring that dog into the shelter to make sure both dogs will get along.
  • Adopting a cat? Adopters must bring a sturdy, non-cardboard pet carrier. (Bedding optional but helpful)

Cost

Bideawee spends an average of $1500 caring for each animal during their stay with us. To help offset these expenses, there is a processing fee for each adoption. In NYC, there is an additional $8.50 license registration fee required for those who adopt a dog.

Dogs

  • Puppies under 6 months – $400
  • Adult dogs under 40 lbs – $300
  • Adult dogs over 40 lbs – $185

Cats

  • Kittens less than 6 months – $180
  • Two kittens – adopt 2 kittens and the second adoption fee is half off.
  • Adult cats – $150
  • Senior cats greater than 7 years – $60

Adoption Consultation

Once the Bideawee Matchmaker has gathered all the necessary information, he/she will take you through all the steps in the adoption process. Bideawee Matchmakers use the information that you provide about your habits and lifestyle to match you with an adoptable animal that aligns with your personality and preferences. Due to the familiarity that all Bideawee Matchmakers have with our animals, we can work with potential adopters to make a perfect match that will last a lifetime.

In addition, if you currently have a dog(s), please bring your dog(s) into the adoption center, where s/he can get acquainted with a Bideawee dog in a private room.
