We had been hoping to adopt a kitten for a long time. We visited Bideawee twice before but left empty-handed, feeling like we just hadn’t met the right cat yet.
Then, on our third visit in October 2024, something special happened. As soon as we walked in, a kitten in the front room ran straight over to greet our 6-year-old daughter from behind the glass. Everywhere our daughter went, the kitten followed—jumping, pawing, and trying her best to get noticed.
She was beautiful, but we had originally set our minds on adopting a male kitten, based on our past experiences with cats. So when we learned she was female, we were a little hesitant. Still, we went in to meet her, and she won us over immediately. She was curious, sweet, and eager to be picked up and played with.
Very quickly, we realized this was our kitten.
We decided to name her Ama, after the striking Himalayan mountain Ama Dablam, whose colors reminded us of her fur. It just felt right.
Our daughter was so excited about the adoption, she said she “almost fainted.” After signing the paperwork, we headed home with Ama in our backpack carrier. On the subway ride back, our daughter read stories to Ama to keep her calm.
Ama is now 9 months old. She feels much more like a cat than a kitten these days, but she’s still curious, sweet, and warm with all three of us. She tolerates endless cuddles and carrying from our daughter, and she always wants to be where we are. If we’re in the kitchen, she’s there too; if I’m working in the bedroom, she’s perched nearby in her window kitty portaledge.
She sleeps on our bed at night and, recently, when I was sick, she curled up next to me and rested her paw in my hand.
Ama has a feisty side too, and she lets us know when she’s had enough attention. But more than anything, she fits perfectly into our family and has brought us an immense amount of joy.
I honestly can’t imagine life without her anymore.
