Staff Spotlight: Robin Akus

I joined Bideawee in July 2023, just three days before the grand opening of the Chelsea location on August 1st. As the Adoptions and Client Care Manager, I’m the first point of contact for the public—whether it’s regarding donations, animal surrenders, adoptions, volunteering, or general inquiries. I work closely with our animal care team to ensure that we find the perfect match between adopters and animals, always considering the needs of both.

Animals have been a part of my life from an early age thanks to my parents, who were avid animal lovers. I have vivid memories of bottle-feeding kittens at just 10-years-old after their mother passed away. My family and I would care for them around the clock—morning feedings, after-school check-ins, and my mom even took time out of her lunch break to help.

At 20, after moving out on my own, my boyfriend and I took in a pair of bottle baby kittens. It was around this time that I began volunteering at my local SPCA, especially after they handled two large-scale hoarding cases, each involving 50 cats. This experience eventually led to a job offer in animal care, where I worked for eight years. I started as cat staff, became the Cat Department Manager, worked in a feral spay/neuter clinic, and ultimately served as Volunteer and Event Manager.

My journey continued from there, eventually bringing me to New York City, where I found my way to Bideawee.

Currently, I share my life with two rescue cats, Furby and Castaway, and I frequently foster for Bideawee, specializing in bottle babies. In my limited spare time, I love exploring used bookstores, taking long walks, and relaxing in parks or at home with my boyfriend and kitties.
